Systematic Review Findings and Products

The college-specific systematic review identified 688 studies that explored the association of college environment-related factors that place youth at increased risk for, or protect them from substance misuse and/or mental health problems. Upon full-text review of 688 studies, 170 studies were found to include factors that were statistically associated (p < 0.05) with at least one substance misuse or one mental health problem. The factor and associated outcome information (substance misuse and/or mental health problem) gathered from these 170 studies was aggregated to generate 18 risk and protective factors, out of which 6 were found to be shared (i.e., associated with both substance misuse and mental health problems (Figure 1).
