Heroin, Other Opioids, and Nonmedical Use of Prescription Drugs (NMUPD)

Since 2000, there has been a four-fold increase in the rate of overdose deaths involving opioids. In 2015 alone, 33,091 drug overdose deaths involved some type of opioid. Out of these opioid-involved overdose deaths, heroin was found to be involved in 39% cases (12,989 deaths), while prescription opioids were associated with 68% cases (22,598 deaths). Combination of both prescription opioids and heroin was found to be associated with 12% cases (4,041 deaths).
